(Central News Agency, Reporter Su Siyun, Taipei, July 3) Medical technology is advancing, and major surgeries that once required several days of hospitalization are gradually developing into a "one-day surgery" model. Life insurers suggest that when planning medical coverage, the public should shift from the traditional "hospitalization benefit-oriented" mindset to a "medical expense coverage" perspective, and are successively launching surgical insurance products.
One-day surgery has recently become a topic of discussion in the medical and life insurance industries. With the increasing maturity of minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic technology, surgeries that previously required at least 2.5 days of hospitalization now have the opportunity to adopt a one-day surgery model. Regarding the issue of one-day surgery claims, the Financial Supervisory Commission explained that if it is a one-day "inpatient surgery" and meets the three conditions for hospitalization, existing policies can still cover hospitalization items; however, if hospitalization procedures are not completed, it will generally be handled according to the provisions for "outpatient surgery."
Fubon Life stated that as medical trends rapidly shift towards "low invasiveness, short hospitalization, or even no hospitalization," it is recommended that the public, when planning medical coverage, should transition from the traditional "hospitalization benefit-oriented" mindset to a "medical expense coverage" perspective. They should prioritize checking if they have comprehensive actual expense medical insurance, and pay special attention to the coverage scope and payment conditions for outpatient surgery and related medical treatments to ensure that medical expenses do not create a gap due to payment conditions being limited to hospitalization. Simultaneously, they should ensure the completeness of surgical coverage items to cope with the changes in medical models.
An Da Life pointed out that its "Shu Shu Ping An" lifelong surgical medical health insurance provides coverage that is not limited to hospitalization. It offers surgical medical insurance benefits, specific surgical recuperation insurance benefits, disability premium waiver, self-funded medical material subsidies, and lifelong coverage, ensuring protection even with advancements in medical technology and changes in treatment methods. In terms of surgical medical insurance benefits, both inpatient and outpatient surgeries are covered as long as they comply with the "Surgical Item and Ratio Table."
Hong Tai Life stated that many treatment models are different from the past, especially in surgical treatment. Technologies such as minimally invasive surgery, endoscopic surgery, and Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery are becoming increasingly mature, and related medical equipment is continuously improving, significantly shortening surgery time and patient recovery periods. Patients who previously needed several days of hospitalization for observation after surgery can now mostly complete it in outpatient or short-term hospitalization, and even return home to recuperate after surgery.
Hong Tai Life observes that the progress in surgical types has also led to changes in the demand for medical insurance coverage. While hospitalization days are decreasing, new medical technologies and surgical methods may be accompanied by higher medical expenses. In response to the increasing prevalence of one-day surgery, Hong Tai Life has launched the one-year, non-guaranteed renewable "Hong Tai Life Jin Shu Shi Medical Health Insurance Rider" as a supplementary solution to existing medical coverage.
Taiwan Life has also launched "Taiwan Life Chao Shun Xin Surgical Medical Lifelong Health Insurance" to meet the needs of modern new medical surgeries. It offers a multiplier-based lifelong surgical medical insurance, covering 1,633 surgical procedures and 168 specific treatments. (Editor: Yang Lanxuan) 1150703
