Penghu Cup National Taekwondo Championships: 266 Athletes Compete in Penghu

(CNA Penghu, July 2nd) The 2026 Penghu Cup National Taekwondo Championships kicked off today with 266 taekwondo athletes from 14 counties and cities across the nation. Penghu Deputy Magistrate Lin Chieh-hsing described the event as a national martial arts gathering, encouraging all participating athletes to uphold the spirit of taekwondo and showcase their training results.

The Penghu Cup National Taekwondo Championships commenced today at the Penghu Multifunctional Comprehensive Gymnasium, jointly inaugurated by Deputy Magistrate Lin Chieh-hsing, Deputy Speaker Lan Kai-yuan, and others. The referees are all national-level. Qin Yu-fang, who won a gold medal in the taekwondo demonstration event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in Korea, is now a coach and referee and was presented with a letter of appointment by the Penghu County Government.

Lin Chieh-hsing stated that Penghu promotes universal sports, with various sports events for everyone. The number of participants in sports, according to the Ministry of Sports' evaluation, ranked second nationwide. This not only demonstrates the fruitful results of Penghu's promotion of universal sports but also aligns with the county government's policy direction of integrating sports with tourism to drive local development. In recent years, the county government has continuously strived to host and organize various national sports events, providing an excellent competitive platform for athletes and allowing more people to learn about and visit Penghu through these events, thereby further boosting local tourism and industrial development.

Lin Chieh-hsing added that seeing so many top school teams and strong dojos gathered in Penghu proves that the Penghu Cup has become a landmark event in the national martial arts scene. Taekwondo has a history of 50 years in Penghu, making it a sport with a deep foundation and wide popularity in the county. He hopes everyone will uphold the attitude of "begin with courtesy, end with courtesy," respect the decisions of coaches and referees, give their all on the field, and demonstrate their best skills and martial ethics developed through regular training.

Deputy Speaker Lan Kai-yuan remarked that taekwondo is not only a display of skill but also emphasizes the cultivation of endurance and discipline. He encouraged all participating athletes to step onto the competition stage with confidence, face challenges with an unyielding spirit, and bravely pursue their dreams. He also expressed hope that everyone can gain experience and build strength from the exciting competitions, showcasing their best performance from regular training.

Retired teacher Ting Te-lu, known as the "Father of Penghu Taekwondo," pointed out that since the establishment of the Penghu County Taekwondo Committee in 1980, it has received the care and support of various sectors. He encouraged the athletes present to remember the spirit of "respecting teachers and valuing their teachings" and to appreciate the hard work and dedication of their coaches.

The Penghu Cup National Taekwondo Championships feature 266 taekwondo athletes from 82 teams representing 14 counties and cities including Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Nantou, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Hualien, and Penghu.
