(CNA Washington, July 2nd,綜合外電) The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) announced today that nonfarm payroll employment, after seasonal adjustment, increased by only 57,000 in June, far below market expectations; the unemployment rate slightly declined.
According to reports from Agence France-Presse and financial media CNBC, the increase in nonfarm payrolls last month was significantly lower than the 115,000 projected by analysts surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires, and also lower than the revised increase of 129,000 in May. The unemployment rate in June fell to 4.2%, a slight increase from 4.1% in the same period last year.
The slight decrease in the unemployment rate mainly reflects a 0.3 percentage point drop in the labor force participation rate to 61.5%, a new low since March 2021. Household employment decreased sharply by 507,000 last month.
According to the data, average hourly earnings in June increased by 0.3% month-on-month and 3.5% year-on-year, both in line with market expectations. This is another important indicator of labor market health.
Professional and business services added 36,000 jobs, social assistance increased by 25,000, and healthcare and government employment each added 22,000 and 8,000 jobs, respectively.
However, leisure and hospitality lost 61,000 jobs, indicating lower-than-usual job recruitment in response to seasonal demand. Some speculated that the FIFA World Cup might boost U.S. employment, with Goldman Sachs Group originally estimating the World Cup would create 40,000 jobs.
Despite this, the job market still maintained positive growth, and it is expected that the U.S. Federal Reserve will not take intervention measures. (Compiled by Hung Chi-yuan) 1150702
