(CNA London, July 2nd, 2024) The Wimbledon Championships continued its second round singles matches today. Iga Swiatek, seeking to defend her women's singles title, defeated her opponent Karolina Pliskova with an overwhelming performance. French Open men's singles champion Alexander Zverev also advanced to the third round of Wimbledon with a straight-sets victory.
According to Agence France-Presse, Swiatek (Iga Swiatek) faced a tough battle in the first round against American player Taylor Townsend, even shedding tears afterward. However, in the second round, she returned to her usual sharp form, taking just 70 minutes to easily defeat former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3.
Swiatek said, "The first round was indeed emotional, but today I felt like it was a normal day. I had to be prepared and stay focused."
The Polish player has had an up-and-down performance since winning her 6th Grand Slam title at the All England Club a year ago. In the next round, she will face Alexandra Eala from the Philippines.
In the men's singles, Zverev (Alexander Zverev) showed excellent form today, defeating French player Valentin Royer 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3), raising expectations that the German star will finally conquer grass-court events.
Zverev won his first Grand Slam title at the French Open last month. He has historically performed poorly at Wimbledon, failing to advance past the Round of 16 in his nine previous appearances.
This year, Zverev is the No. 2 seed and has a great opportunity to go further, as Italian star Jannik Sinner and Serbian ace Novak Djokovic are in the other half of the draw, and No. 4 seed Ben Shelton has already been eliminated.
Zverev said, "If I can continue to perform like this, I believe there is definitely a chance this year. In tennis, regardless of the outcome, good or bad, you have to put it behind you quickly." (Compiled by Yang Chao-yen) 1150703
