CANBERRA, July 2 (CNA) -- A 34-year-old Taiwanese national, accused of aggravated people smuggling in Australia, appeared in court today and, through an interpreter, stated he was "completely unaware of any people smuggling activities." He also mentioned he has not yet had the opportunity to contact family, friends, or seek legal advice.

According to ABC News, a group believed to be Chinese nationals allegedly arrived by boat on the morning of June 30, landing illegally at a popular campsite about 50 kilometers north of Weipa, near the northernmost point of Australia in Cape York, Queensland.

Australian authorities have not disclosed the number of people on board but stated that the group has been deported.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that on the afternoon of the same day, 34-year-old Chien-Wen Peng (phonetic transliteration) from Taiwan was arrested in the parking lot of a supermarket in Weipa on suspicion of people smuggling.

Peng appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court in Queensland today, with a Mandarin interpreter present but no legal representation. He is charged with one count of aggravated people smuggling involving more than 5 individuals.

When the judge explained the charges to Peng, he stated through the interpreter, "I am completely unaware of any people smuggling activities."

Prosecutors opposed bail, citing the risk of flight and witness interference.

Peng stated that he has not yet had the opportunity to contact family, friends, or seek legal advice.

He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on the morning of the 3rd.

The AFP indicated that another 30-year-old man is also under investigation and has been detained under the Migration Act pending further questioning.

Weipa is one of the largest towns on the Cape York Peninsula, with a population of about 4,000, primarily reliant on the bauxite mining industry. It is located northwest of Cairns, approximately 800 kilometers away.

Australian Minister for Immigration, Tony Burke, issued a statement saying, "The operation has concluded, all those who attempted to enter without a visa have been removed, and those who assisted will be prosecuted according to law." (Compiled by Tsai Chia-min) 1150702
