(CNA Taipei, July 2nd) The Beijing 'China Zun' collision incident, which has drawn significant public attention, has been officially reported as a case of endangering public safety caused by personal reasons. The driver, identified as Mr. Liu, has a long-term history of insomnia and anxiety.
On June 26th, the CITIC Tower (also known as 'China Zun'), a 108-story building in Beijing, was struck by a small aircraft. Given that Beijing is the political center and capital of China, its airspace is strictly controlled, leading to widespread speculation both domestically and internationally regarding the 'China Zun' collision incident.
The WeChat public account 'Beijing Chaoyang' released a statement this afternoon to further clarify the situation.
The statement indicated that on June 26th, an incident involving a light sport aircraft colliding with a high-rise building occurred near the East Third Ring Road in Beijing's Chaoyang District. Upon receiving the report, relevant departments immediately launched an investigation and response. The 13 injured individuals are not in life-threatening condition after treatment, with one already discharged.
The statement explained that the aircraft involved was an Arra SA60L single-engine, two-seat propeller-driven light aircraft, registered as B-12PP. The pilot, Mr. Liu, is a 66-year-old Beijing resident and a freelancer. He is divorced and lives alone. He obtained a sports pilot license in 2021 and a private pilot license in 2024.
The statement pointed out that on the afternoon of the incident, Mr. Liu took off from a general aviation airport in Pinggu District and conducted both escort and independent flights. During the independent flight, he deviated from the designated area, lost contact with the airport, and subsequently collided with the high-rise building, resulting in his death at the scene.
The statement concluded that Mr. Liu had long suffered from insomnia and anxiety, with multiple entries in his diary expressing intentions to 'end his life.' Based on the comprehensive investigation, this has been determined to be a case of endangering public safety caused by personal reasons. (Editor: Lu Jia-rong / Zhu Jian-ling) 1150702
