(Taipei, July 2, 2023, CNA Foreign News) Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of today. The fierce bombardment caused huge explosions, shaking Kyiv for several hours, resulting in at least one death and 11 injuries.
Russian forces used ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, targeting both banks of the Dnipro River and 10 administrative districts within the city.
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko, as reported by the Associated Press, the attack damaged residential buildings, killing one person and injuring several others.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that at least 11 people were injured.
Agence France-Presse reported that the Russian attack resulted in two deaths and 11 injuries in Kyiv.
Following the first wave of alerts issued by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the authorities, many citizens sought refuge in subway stations.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has launched long-range drone attacks on military targets and energy facilities within Russia, leading to fuel shortages and disrupted supply lines in Russia; meanwhile, Russia's attacks on Kyiv have continued to intensify.
Klitschko urged citizens to remain in shelters, describing the capital as being under "mad attack by the enemy."
He pointed out that five people were injured in the Shevchenkivskyi district, with one paramedic in critical condition. In the Desnianskyi district, a nine-story residential building was damaged, trapping some residents, and rescue personnel have rushed to the scene. In Holosiivskyi district, the roof of a multi-story building caught fire.
Additionally, in Sviatoshynskyi and Darnytskyi districts, fires broke out in multiple residential buildings, with people trapped in the rubble. (Compiled by Chi Chin-ling) 1150702
