(CNA reporter Jiang Yijun, Yunlin County, July 1st) The "Centennial Ponlai Rice" themed exhibition, jointly planned by the Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association and the Taiwan Rice Jar Sustainable Care Association, opened today at the Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association. It leads the public to review the important journey of Ponlai rice taking root and developing in Taiwan, and looks forward to the sustainable vision and actions for the next century.
The Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association held a press conference today for "Centennial Rice Waves X Tou-nan Town" in 2026. Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association Secretary-General Chang Yen-jung and principals from several elementary schools in Tou-nan Township attended the exhibition, hoping to allow the public to savor the evolution of Taiwanese rice culture and the emotional connection to the land during their visit, and to re-understand the important value of Ponlai rice to Taiwan's agriculture and food culture.
Chang Yen-jung stated that this year marks the 100th anniversary of Ponlai rice's development in Taiwan. Ponlai rice is not just an agricultural product; it carries the efforts and emotions of Taiwanese agriculture over the past century. Therefore, in collaboration with the association, we hope that through this exhibition, more people will see the role and mission of the Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association in Taiwan's rice industry, and gain a deeper understanding of the precious value of Taiwanese rice culture.
Chang Yen-jung pointed out that the exhibition's core theme is "Centennial Rice Waves. Generational Inheritance," starting from the historical background of Ponlai rice's introduction to Taiwan, extending to variety improvement, agricultural technology innovation, the evolution of rice culture, and modern consumption patterns, as well as sustainable agriculture and future trends.
In addition to reviewing the hundred-year history of Ponlai rice, the static exhibition also focuses on the development of the Tou-nan Township Farmers' Association and the "Tou-nan Town" brand, revealing the background story of the Tou-nan Fine Rice Mill's birth and the key factors that made Koshihikari rice the representative product of Tou-nan Town.
Chang Yen-jung said that the exhibition runs from today until August 31st of this year. There will be guided tours by staff every afternoon. On Friday and Saturday afternoons, there will be a total of 18 rice tasting events in the exhibition area. In addition to a limited 27 servings of free rice tasting, tips for cooking delicious white rice will also be shared.
You Ssu-ying, CEO of the Taiwan Rice Jar Sustainable Care Association, stated that the centennial of Ponlai rice is not only an important milestone in agricultural development but also represents the long-standing emotional connection between Taiwanese people and the land. Through this special exhibition, we hope to allow more people to re-understand the value of Taiwanese rice culture and further focus on issues such as organic and friendly agriculture, sustainable agriculture, and food security.
