(CNA Islamabad, July 1st, Combined Foreign Reports) Pakistan's military announced today that it intercepted four drones from Afghanistan yesterday, marking the latest incident in months of escalating conflict between the two nations.
According to Agence France-Presse, the Afghan Taliban government had vowed to retaliate against Pakistan's deadly airstrikes in eastern Afghanistan this week. The Afghan Ministry of Defense issued a statement overnight claiming airstrikes were launched against militants in Pakistan's border provinces.
The Pakistani military stated that Afghan Taliban forces yesterday "launched four rudimentary drones towards the Balochistan province on the border... The enemy aerial platforms were immediately detected by Pakistan's robust air defense network."
The military added, "If the Afghan Taliban government continues to provoke Pakistan, they will receive a corresponding response and pay a heavy price for it."
The Afghan Ministry of Defense posted on the social media platform X, stating that Afghanistan launched "airstrikes" targeting Pakistan's Balochistan province and the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and that the airstrikes caused casualties among Islamic State (IS) group members.
Pakistan, however, denied that its territory was used by the Islamic State, did not mention any casualties, and accused the Afghan government of "misleading" its people, stating the drone attack was "effectively thwarted." (Intern Editor: Hsieh Min-an / Editor: Yang Chao-yen) 1150701
