Fwusow Salad Oil Ingredient Benzopyrene Non-compliant, 6 Batches Recalled

(CNA Reporter He Xiuling Taipei, July 1) Following Tai Shan's announcement on June 30 that it had been notified by its contract manufacturer, Chung Lien Oil, that salad oil ingredients supplied had been found to contain benzopyrene (BaP) in non-compliance with regulatory standards, Fwusow also issued a statement saying it had been notified by Chung Lien Oil that benzopyrene in the same batch of soybean salad oil ingredient was found to be non-compliant with regulatory standards during third-party testing. Fwusow has initiated a food safety response mechanism and is recalling the affected products.

Chung Lien Oil was established in 1995 and is jointly invested in by three domestic oil manufacturers: Fwusow, Formosa Oil, and Tai Shan.

Fwusow issued a statement today stating that after receiving notification from its upstream soybean salad oil supplier, Chung Lien Oil, on the evening of June 30, it immediately conducted a comprehensive inventory of raw materials and affected products at its plant. There are currently no raw materials or products from this batch at the plant.

Fwusow pointed out that products related to this batch of raw materials include Fwusow Soybean Salad Oil 3 liters, Soybean Salad Oil 18 liters (a total of 4 batch numbers), and Fwusow Jian Wei Sesame Oil 3 liters, totaling 6 batch numbers, for which a recall mechanism has been initiated.

Fwusow stated that this incident is an isolated event from an upstream supplier, but based on food safety considerations, it has completed an investigation into the product flow and notified the health authorities. Commercial oil will be notified and handled by dedicated personnel, while the return method for general consumers will be announced separately.

Fwusow pointed out that its series of products produced at the Fwusow Taichung Port plant, including sesame oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, brown rice oil, palm oil, flavored oils, and blended vegetable oils, are unrelated to this incident.

Yesterday, Tai Shan was the first to announce that after receiving notification from Chung Lien Oil, in addition to preemptively recalling products using this batch of raw materials, it also expanded testing to related products produced from April to June, submitting them for third-party inspection, and providing consumers with a return mechanism.

Tai Shan stated that the products potentially affected include Golden Crispy Frying Oil 18 liters, Salad Oil 18 liters, Eco-friendly Iron Drum Salad Oil 18 kg, Tai Shan Unsaturated Soybean Salad Oil 2.6 liters, Tai Shan Selected Vegetable Oil 3 liters, Tai Shan Good Mix Blended Oil 2 liters, Tai Shan Soybean Salad Oil 0.6 liters, Tai Shan European Fruit Essence Blended Oil 1.5 liters, and Tai Shan Good Mix Blended Oil 0.6 liters.
