US-Iran War Key News

(CNA Dubai, July 1st, Foreign News) A diplomat familiar with the talks revealed that US and Iranian officials will hold indirect technical-level talks in Doha, the capital of Qatar, today regarding an agreement between the two sides.

According to AFP, the diplomat said, "US and Iranian officials will hold indirect technical talks in Doha on Wednesday, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, to discuss a memorandum of understanding based on the achievements of the Lake Lucerne Summit."

The diplomat also stated that US President Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and envoy Steve Witkoff will not participate in these technical-level talks. The two men met with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani yesterday.

Both the US and Iran had previously stated they would send officials to Qatar to attend the meeting.

This memorandum of understanding, brokered by Qatar and Pakistan, includes a 60-day ceasefire, the reopening of the blockaded Strait of Hormuz, and a timetable for ending the war and reaching a final agreement on Iran's nuclear program.

Iranian officials are scheduled to travel to Doha today, but Tehran has denied Trump's earlier statement about direct talks being imminent.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed that Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi will lead the Iranian delegation, but he stated that officials "have no plans to negotiate with the US at any level in the coming days."

The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Kushner and Witkoff met with the Qatari Prime Minister yesterday. The ministry's statement indicated that they discussed "ongoing negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran based on the memorandum of understanding" and also discussed developments in Lebanon.
