Haarlem Baseball Tournament: Chen Hsiao-yun's go-ahead hit leads Taiwan to 3rd win in preliminary round

(CNA Taipei, July 1) Taiwan's training team in the baseball event of the Nagoya Asian Games participated in the Haarlem Baseball Tournament in the Netherlands. Today, they faced the previously undefeated Italian team. In the second inning, Chen Hsiao-yun's timely hit gave them the lead, and they ultimately won 6-4. Their preliminary round record is 3 wins and 2 losses, ranking third.

The training team defeated Curacao in extra innings in their preliminary round opener, then lost to host Netherlands and the Czech Republic. Yesterday they defeated the World Stars, and today they faced the Italian team, which had won all 4 of its previous games. Italy scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning with consecutive hits and an error.

In the top of the second inning, the training team's Kao Yu-wei led off with a hit. With a catcher's interference, a walk, and a runner advancing on a wild pitch, they loaded the bases. A pitcher's violation allowed one run to score. With two outs, another walk, Chen Hsiao-yun's timely hit, and an opponent's defensive error allowed three more runs to score, flipping the game and giving them a 4-2 lead.

The training team continued their offense in the top of the third inning. Chen Min-tsu drew a walk. With a hit by Kao Yu-wei and another opponent's defensive error, they loaded the bases again. Chen Min-tsu scored on a wild pitch, and Kao Yu-wei stole home for the team's sixth run. Chen Hsiao-yun had one hit today, contributing 2 RBIs.

Training team starting pitcher Chang Yen-tse gave up 2 runs in the first inning but no runs in the second and third. In the bottom of the fourth, with two outs, he gave up a 2-run home run to Nathanael Batista and then walked a batter before exiting. Huang Po-ju came on in relief to stop the bleeding, inducing a ground ball out.

Chang Yen-tse pitched a total of 3.2 innings today, giving up 7 hits and 4 earned runs. Huang Po-ju pitched 2.1 innings in relief, allowing only 1 hit, issuing 2 walks, and giving up no runs to earn the win. Lin Chih-ying, Wang Yu-chieh, and Wang Cheng-hao each pitched one inning in relief with no runs allowed. Wang Cheng-hao earned the save.

After 5 preliminary round games, the training team's record is 3 wins and 2 losses, ranking third. Italy's record is 4 wins and 1 loss, ranking first. Host Netherlands currently has a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, ranking second. Curacao, the Czech Republic, and the World Stars all have records of 1 win and 3 losses.
