(CNA Taipei, July 1st) China's "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress" took effect today. Premier Cho Jung-tai stated that the people of Taiwan will not agree to China's attempt to include Taiwan within its regulations through this law. To protect the public, the government will certainly take action and propose corresponding countermeasures. He also said he does not know how the ruling and opposition parties in Taiwan view this provision, and "which political party will openly support it, or be unwilling to loudly oppose it."
Starting today, China is implementing the "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress," which asserts that the cause of ethnic unity must be led by the Communist Party of China and that overseas organizations and individuals can be held accountable.
Speaking at the Financial Competitiveness Forum, Cho Jung-tai stated that China's Law on Ethnic Unity, through legalization, insists on the leadership of the Communist Party of China to promote various matters of ethnic unity and includes Taiwan's 23.5 million people within its scope. Anyone who disseminates information deemed detrimental to ethnic unity as defined by the Law on Ethnic Unity, whether inside or outside of China, will be considered a splitter who intends to cause division. Furthermore, regardless of whether this person is inside or outside of China, they can be arrested, lured and arrested, declared a fugitive, or prosecuted. This is long-arm jurisdiction and cross-border suppression.
He stated that the Law on Ethnic Unity aims to legalize China's unification policy, to make the people of Taiwan submit to the political framework set by the Chinese Communist Party, with the ultimate goal of annexing Taiwan and eliminating the Republic of China. Even the four characters "Republic of China" will not be tolerated, and perhaps even "July 1st of the Republic of China" written in newspapers may become targets of suppression in the future.
Cho Jung-tai said he does not know how the ruling and opposition parties in Taiwan will view this provision, which political party will openly support it or be unwilling to loudly oppose it. If they do not oppose this Law on Ethnic Unity, it is equivalent to submitting to the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
Cho Jung-tai emphasized that the 23.5 million people of Taiwan will not agree to this provision, this regulation, or this law. The government will certainly make further efforts on the existing basis of protecting the people of Taiwan, and will inevitably take action and propose countermeasures.
