(Central News Agency, Reporter Chang Yi-lien, Kaohsiung, June 30) The "Friendly Ocean Mark" promoted by the Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA) will begin accepting applications tomorrow. Products that use 5% or more of marine waste-derived recycled materials and provide third-party verification reports can apply for the mark, which aims to reduce the environmental burden on the ocean.
The Marine Conservation Administration of the Ocean Affairs Council explained today that the "Friendly Ocean Mark" aims to establish a traceable green label for products that genuinely contain marine waste-derived recycled materials through legalized management and third-party scientific verification, guiding domestic industries to soundly connect with international trends in plastic reduction and net-zero carbon emissions.
The OCA stated in a press release that according to the "Operational Guidelines for the Promotion of the Friendly Ocean Mark by the Ocean Affairs Council," the proportion of marine waste-derived recycled materials used in products applying for the Friendly Ocean Mark must be 5% or more. Applicants must provide a verification report conducted by a third-party institution to be eligible to apply for the mark.
OCA Director Lu Hsiao-chun said that the Friendly Ocean Mark grants different levels of marks based on the proportion of marine waste-derived materials added, with four levels: copper, silver, gold, and platinum. A QR Code will also be displayed on the product to disclose information, allowing consumers and procurement parties to understand the situation of marine waste-derived recycled materials used in the product.
The OCA pointed out that the treatment of marine waste is gradually moving towards a circular economy closed-loop model of "source governance, local translation to high-value application." It is hoped that by promoting the Friendly Ocean Mark, businesses will be encouraged to develop ocean-friendly products, reduce the environmental burden on the ocean, and establish a label for ocean-friendly products for the public to choose from.
The OCA added that the review fee for new applications for the Friendly Ocean Mark is NT$500 per case, and the certificate fee is NT$160 per case. The validity period is 3 years. The first 20 applications will be exempt from the review fee. Applications will officially open on July 1. Related information can be found on the "Friendly Ocean Mark Information Platform."
