Tri-Service Academy Joint Graduation Ceremony: Taiwanese Cadet at West Point Vows to Lead by Example

(CNA reporter You Kai-hsiang, Taipei, June 30) The tri-service academies held a joint graduation ceremony today. Lin Han-yu, an Army Academy cadet who trained at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, will serve in the 58th Artillery Command. He encouraged himself to be humble, lead by example, and lead his troops with dedication, hoping to build stronger combat power for the ROC Armed Forces. Guatemalan exchange student Hailey Shan hopes to use her acquired knowledge to improve the current situation of the Guatemalan Navy and deepen bilateral relations.

The joint graduation ceremony for the tri-service academies in the Republic of 115 (2026) was held this morning at the Fuxinggang campus in Beitou. President Lai Ching-te presided over the ceremony and took a group photo with the graduates.

Lin Han-yu, a graduating cadet from the Army Academy who studied Space Science at West Point, will serve in the 58th Artillery Command. He said in an interview that he has loved military affairs since elementary school, as well as history and leadership. In junior high school, he felt that soldiers were very important to the country, so he decided to apply to a military academy in the second year of junior high. His family told him that if he was going to attend a military academy, he should set high standards for himself, and he worked hard to meet the admission standards of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point at that time.

He shared that he learned several things during his four years at West Point. First, to treat subordinates with humility; second, to lead by example; and third, to lead troops with dedication. He will strive for these three points when he joins his unit in the future and hopes to build stronger combat power for the ROC Armed Forces.

Hailey Shan, an exchange student from the friendly nation of Guatemala, who is studying in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering at the University Defense Management Institute, said in an interview that Taiwan has very rich resources and provides many educational programs, tools, and skills for foreign students. She majors in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and hopes to improve the current situation of the Guatemalan Navy, enhance its technology, and deepen the bilateral relations between Taiwan and Guatemala in the future.
