(CNA, Taipei, June 29) Cabin motorcycles will be allowed on roads starting June 30. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOT) announced today that cabin motorcycles will have the same road rights as small cars, but they will not be permitted on highways and expressways, nor on motorcycle-only lanes. This means the public will not be able to ride cabin motorcycles on the Tamsui-Kueishan Bridge.

The MOT recently announced amendments to the "Road Traffic Safety Rules," allowing three-wheeled motorcycles with enclosed cabins and steering wheel-type steering systems (cabin motorcycles) to be ridden on roads from June 30.

According to the MOT's announcement, drivers of cabin motorcycles must hold a driver's license for small cars or higher, similar to Japan's requirements. Their road rights will be the same as those for small cars, but they will not be allowed on highways and expressways.

Drivers operating a cabin motorcycle with only a motorcycle license will be fined between NT$6,000 and NT$12,000. Driving without a license will result in a fine of NT$18,000 to NT$36,000.

Hu Di-chi, deputy director-general of the MOT's Department of Transportation and Information, stated in an interview today that because cabin motorcycles have the same road rights as small cars, they are not allowed on motorcycle-only lanes. Roads like the Tamsui-Kueishan Bridge, where the vehicle lanes are considered part of highways or expressways, will not permit cabin motorcycles.

Regarding expressways managed by local governments, such as Taipei's Jianguo Elevated Expressway and Huandong Boulevard, Hu Di-chi said that whether cabin motorcycles can be ridden on them will depend on the local government's decision.

Hu Di-chi added that cabin motorcycles do not need to make U-turns in two stages, but violations will be penalized according to motorcycle regulations. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150629
