Special Report: European Energy Transition (9 articles total)
By 2025, the EU's renewable energy share will surpass fossil fuels. However, as the explosion of AI computing power brings a "tsunami of electricity consumption," Europe's green energy ideals are showing cracks. Many countries are rethinking their strategies: Germany is experimenting with artificial suns, Italy is breaking a 40-year taboo to restart nuclear power and participate in hydrogen corridors, and France is leveraging nuclear energy as a key asset. Europe is unveiling an "energy transition" crucial for industrial development and geopolitical security.
(Central News Agency, Taipei, June 29) YFY Smart, a subsidiary of YFY Inc., announced that last year's Typhoon Doksuri caused widespread damage to power, communication, and transportation systems in many areas. To enhance power supply resilience and response capabilities, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has allocated a budget to promote the "Small-Scale Disaster Prevention Microgrid Construction Plan." YFY Smart has secured the disaster prevention microgrid projects in Tainan City and Chiayi County, marking significant implementation efforts for this microgrid initiative.
Yen Hui-ching, Chairman of YFY Holdings and YFY Smart, stated in a press release today that the government continues to strengthen Taiwan's energy resilience strategy. Microgrids, as a key application of distributed power systems, have become a crucial solution. YFY Smart stood out among numerous competitors with its advantages in site resilience, domestic equipment, management systems, and energy efficiency. It will establish disaster prevention microgrid sites in seven locations across Tainan City (Madou District, Cigu District, Nanhua District) and Chiayi County (Budaizhen, Yizhu Township, Dongshih Township, and Liujiao Township), utilizing public facility spaces.
He mentioned that YFY Smart will integrate existing solar photovoltaic systems, align with the government's energy localization policy direction, adopt domestically produced equipment from Formosa Plastics Smart Energy Storage Systems, and incorporate power conversion systems, energy management systems (EMS), and diesel generators to build a complete disaster prevention microgrid. This will enable autonomous management of power generation, energy storage, grid connection, and power supply functions.
He added that during normal peak electricity usage hours, the system can perform demand reduction and peak load shifting, effectively lowering contracted capacity. In the event of a power outage due to natural disasters, the site can immediately switch to islanding mode, maintaining power for emergency lighting and essential equipment for up to 72 hours. This will enhance community grid resilience through diversified methods and comprehensively improve site disaster preparedness.
Yen Hui-ching stated that YFY Smart's undertaking of the Tainan City and Chiayi County disaster prevention microgrid construction plan extends from enterprise site demonstrations to large-scale implementation in public disaster prevention, serving as a reference case for energy resilience that other counties and cities can emulate.
