SAN JOSE, California (CNA) - Police in San Jose, California, reported that a shooting at a popular entertainment venue today resulted in one death and one critical injury. The location of the incident was also a designated fan zone set up by authorities for the public to watch World Cup broadcasts.

According to Reuters, the incident occurred at San Pedro Square, one of several venues in the San Francisco Bay Area where large crowds gathered to watch World Cup match broadcasts. The Bay Area has dozens of World Cup fan zones.

The World Cup was not being broadcast at the venue when the incident happened. The only match of the day had concluded around 2 p.m. local time (9 p.m. GMT).

San Jose Police stated on social media platform X, "One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and another injured person is in critical condition and has been transported to a local hospital for treatment," adding that police are investigating the incident as a homicide.

The Bay Area has hosted several World Cup matches so far. The next match is scheduled for later on July 1, local time, where host nation USA will face Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in the Round of 32 knockout stage.

Reuters reporters at the scene observed a large police presence and several police vehicles. They also saw a person, partially covered by a white sheet, being quickly carried away on a stretcher by uniformed personnel.

Following the incident, the area was cordoned off. Most bars within the affected zone temporarily suspended operations, and several nearby roads were temporarily closed.

A security guard, who wished to remain anonymous, described seeing the injured person in distress, stating, "The person was continuously groaning and moaning, with blood on their neck and upper back.
