WASHINGTON, June 26 (CNA) — Following the signing of a U.S.-Iran memorandum to end hostilities and the commencement of subsequent negotiations, reports have emerged of a maritime attack in the Strait of Hormuz. Former President Donald Trump stated today that Iran launched at least four drones at vessels navigating the waterway, with one striking a large cargo ship. Trump characterized the act as a "foolish" violation of the established ceasefire agreement.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that of the four one-way attack drones launched by Iran, one struck the upper deck of a large cargo vessel. While the ship sustained damage, it remained operational. U.S. forces reportedly intercepted the other three drones. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had previously reported that a cargo ship near Oman was struck by a projectile. While the Persian Gulf Strait Authority stated that vessels deviating from designated lanes cannot be guaranteed safe passage, sources identified the affected vessel as the Singapore-flagged "Ever Lovely."
Evergreen Marine Corporation issued a statement confirming that the "Ever Lovely," operated by its Singapore subsidiary, was struck by an unidentified object on the starboard side of its navigation bridge superstructure at 9:55 p.m. Taipei time on the 25th, while following UKMTO recommended routes. The company noted that while the bridge windows and eaves were damaged, the crew, vessel, and cargo remain secure, and the ship has since departed the Strait of Hormuz safely.
The U.S.-Iran memorandum, signed recently, declares an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations across all fronts, with both nations committing to negotiate a final agreement within 60 days.
