TAOYUAN, June 26 (CNA) - Driven by peripheral circulation from Typhoon Mekkhala and a passing front, the Shihmen Reservoir catchment area has experienced significant rainfall. The Northern Water Resources Branch (NWRB) launched a sediment flushing operation via the Amuping Anti-Siltation Tunnel this morning. It is estimated that approximately 250,000 cubic meters of mud and sand, previously pumped into the flushing pool and downstream channels, will be discharged.
The NWRB stated that to mitigate the impact of reservoir sedimentation, the flushing operation began at 8:00 AM. This marks the sixth activation of the Amuping Anti-Siltation Tunnel, contributing to the extension of the reservoir's operational lifespan.
As of 8:00 AM today, the water level of the Shihmen Reservoir stood at 244.96 meters, with a storage volume of 205 million cubic meters and a storage rate of 99.8%. The reservoir is currently undergoing flood control regulation to manage inflow and maintain structural safety.
The NWRB warned that the flushing operation will increase water levels and flow velocities in downstream sections. The public is advised to avoid riverbeds and water-based activities to ensure safety.
