Kim Jong Un Oversees Weapon Tests to Bolster Southern Border Firepower

North Korea's state media reported on the 26th that leader Kim Jong Un inspected tests of key weapon systems yesterday, as part of the regime's ongoing initiative to modernize its arsenal and strengthen military deployments along the border with South Korea.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the tests conducted on the Korean War armistice anniversary featured an upgraded 240mm 24-tube multiple rocket launcher system, tactical ballistic missiles, and 155mm self-propelled artillery. The report highlighted that the modernized rocket system now features an autonomous precision guidance capability, with its operational range extended to 90 kilometers.

Kim expressed satisfaction with the results, emphasizing Pyongyang's strategic focus on the automation and extended range of 'ultra-precision' weapon systems to enhance defensive capabilities along the inter-Korean border. This follows previous tests last month of tactical missiles, rocket artillery, and AI-guided precision cruise missiles.

Lim Eul-chul, a professor at the Institute for Far Eastern Studies at Kyungnam University, noted that the objective appears to be the establishment of comprehensive tactical nuclear and precision strike capabilities, placing the entire territory of South Korea within striking range. South Korea's Unification Ministry stated that these tests are consistent with the North's five-year national defense development plan.
