Taipei/Hsinchu, June 24 (CNA) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP) founder Ko Wen-je campaigned for the party’s Zhubei mayoral candidate, Chiu Chen-yuan, on Monday. Addressing the ongoing discussions regarding "Blue-White" (KMT-TPP) cooperation, Ko stated that TPP caucus whip Huang Kuo-chang remains in active communication with the Kuomintang (KMT). He emphasized that both parties intend to foster cooperation based on mutual trust and understanding, with negotiations currently underway.

Ko appeared alongside Chiu and his campaign team, including campaign manager Homer Jack and spokesperson Huang Hsin-yu, to mark the official launch of the campaign. Ko noted that the central strategy for this election is to effectively convert public support into actual seats in the council.

Regarding the cooperation dynamic, Ko reiterated that the TPP and KMT are closely discussing potential synergies. He expressed hope that collaboration will proceed without being hampered by narrow individual interests, ensuring the overall electoral layout remains effective.

Homer Jack, Deputy Chief of the TPP Hsinchu Chapter and campaign manager, highlighted the high level of autonomy among TPP supporters, noting they base their votes on a candidate’s performance and alignment with public expectations rather than strict party directives.

When asked about his commitment to the race, Chiu stated that his priority is local grassroots engagement and that he is continuing preparations to run. He added that the goal of any electoral strategy must be victory, and he respects the consultation mechanisms established between the parties.

In response, the KMT Hsinchu County Chapter issued a statement noting that they have completed internal polling, resulting in the nomination of incumbent County Councilor Wu Hsu-chih. They stated that final confirmation of a joint candidate remains subject to coordination between the party central headquarters and the TPP. Zhubei is considered a pivotal district, and the KMT aims to reach a consensus with the TPP to secure a victory.
