The United States and Iran concluded the first round of negotiations aimed at ending the Middle East war at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland. US Vice President JD Vance told reporters that Tehran has agreed to invite International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into the country.
Vance stated, 'Iran has agreed to allow IAEA inspectors to return.' He emphasized that this is 'a significant milestone for the American people and the first step toward achieving Iran’s permanent denuclearization or the permanent end of its nuclear weapons program.'
After the joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran in June 2025, Tehran halted cooperation with the IAEA, and since then, IAEA inspectors have not been able to access nuclear materials.
Vance expects that discussions on the return of IAEA inspectors will begin soon, saying, 'I expect progress at least this week, and we even believe talks involving inspectors and the IAEA could begin as early as today.'
Following the conclusion of the first round of talks, Vance told journalists, 'We have laid a very solid foundation for a successful final agreement. The final agreement is the “house.” We’ve laid the foundation. The house isn’t built yet, but we’ve laid the groundwork for a better future for the American people.'
He added, 'There is still much to do, including advancing nuclear and economic negotiations, clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz, and ensuring the resumption of shipping. We will work to complete these tasks.'
