Representative to Japan, Lee I-yang, met with the Taiwan-Japanese professional sumo wrestler Azumaryu in Tokyo on June 22. Lee noted that Azumaryu is the most accomplished wrestler of Taiwanese descent to date, having reached the top Makuuchi division. He encouraged the wrestler to continue his pursuit of higher rankings and expressed his hope that a Japan Grand Sumo tour could return to Taiwan to further bilateral sports exchange.

The meeting was facilitated by Japanese House of Representatives member Shinichiro Kawamatsu. Attendees included Azumaryu’s mother, Hidetada Shiraishi, his stablemaster Tochiazuma Daisuke of Tamanoi Stable, and Overseas Community Affairs Council member Lin Yueh-li, who leads the Azumaryu Taiwan Support Association.

Lee praised Azumaryu’s professional journey, highlighting his promotion to the Juryo division in 2021 and the elite Makuuchi division in 2023. He noted that the wrestler is known for his agility and power on the dohyo. Azumaryu shared his connection to Taiwan, noting that he frequently visited Kaohsiung, his mother’s hometown, during his youth. Stablemaster Tochiazuma reflected on his 2006 visit to Taiwan with a sumo delegation, underscoring the deep historical ties between the sport and the two regions.

Both sides expressed their commitment to leveraging these cultural and sports connections to foster a stronger partnership between the two nations.
