(Central News Agency reporter Guo Fangjun, Zurich, June 21) Switzerland's largest LGBTQ+ event, the Zurich Pride Parade, took place on June 20 under the theme 'Protect Queer Youth,' calling on society to pay greater attention to the challenges faced by queer youth. Despite reduced corporate sponsorship and financial deficits forcing the cancellation of the traditional carnival party, the event still attracted approximately 20,000 participants, with a vibrant and energetic atmosphere.

Dubbed Switzerland's most colorful parade, the Zurich Pride March officially began with an opening speech by newly elected mayor Raphael Golta. Golta emphasized that social progress is never guaranteed and must be actively fought for, stating, 'You are the heart of Zurich. Today belongs to you. Stay proud! Stay joyful!'

This year's theme, 'Protect Queer Youth,' was chosen by organizers to highlight growing concerns about backsliding support for gender-diverse individuals within Switzerland's healthcare system and schools. The campaign urges society to remain vigilant and strengthen protections for LGBTQ+ youth.

However, the event was scaled down compared to previous years. Influenced by political criticism of LGBTQ+ groups in the United States, several major corporations reduced their sponsorship of the Zurich Pride Parade. Combined with financial deficits faced by the organizing committee, the annual post-parade carnival party was canceled.

According to Swiss media outlet Blick, the Zurich Pride Association has recently faced internal criticism over mismanagement, overambitious expansion, and unfulfilled promises. In addition to financial shortfalls, the board has undergone multiple personnel changes and is currently operating without a chairperson, contributing to the downsizing of this year's event.

Despite the cancellation of the large-scale party, around 20,000 people participated in the parade and related activities, according to official announcements on June 21. Journalists on-site at the lakeside endpoint observed many attendees jumping into Lake Zurich to cool off amid a heatwave. Although the traditional party was absent, the atmosphere remained lively, with families from all generations—children to seniors—joining in the celebration.

The Zurich Pride Parade is Switzerland's largest rainbow-themed event. As Pride Month continues in June, major events are scheduled next weekend in Lausanne and Basel, expected to draw not only Swiss LGBTQ+ organizations but also participants from Germany and France.
