ROME, June 19 (CNA) — A diplomatic rift has erupted between the United States and Italy after President Donald Trump alleged that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had 'begged' for a photo during the G7 summit. In response, Meloni refuted the claim as a fabrication, and the Italian Foreign Minister has canceled his scheduled visit to the United States.
Following the G7 summit in Evian-Les-Bains, rumors of a 'thaw' in relations surfaced after a photo of Meloni and Trump speaking on the sidelines was released. However, in a call with Italian broadcaster La7, Trump stated, 'She begged me for a photo, she wanted it so badly. I wouldn't have agreed, but I felt sorry for her.'
Meloni expressed shock at these comments, labeling them 'pure fabrications' and emphasizing that neither she nor Italy would ever beg anyone for anything. She questioned why a US President would treat an ally this way, while Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned the remarks as 'vile and insulting,' subsequently cancelling his visit to Washington. The US State Department confirmed that a joint business meeting between Tajani and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Miami has been called off.
Observers note this marks a low point in a relationship that was previously characterized by ideological alignment. Tensions have simmered since April, when Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV’s stance on war, drawing a defense from Meloni that led to Trump’s public disappointment. The situation remains volatile as both nations navigate this period of diplomatic friction.
