Central News Agency Report

(CNA reporter Lu Tai-cheng, Taitung County, June 19) Sheng'an Temple in Yongan Village, Luye Township, Taitung County held its traditional Wushi water collection and egg-standing competition on the Dragon Boat Festival, attracting hundreds of participants. Guo Yiying from Taitung City won the championship by standing 34 eggs and received a prize of NT$20,000.

The event, a highlight of Taitung’s Dragon Boat Festival celebrations, began at 10 a.m. and drew participants from other counties and students from the Chinese Department of the University of Hong Kong. Legislative Yuan member Huang Chien-pin (KMT), Council Speaker Wu Hsiu-hua, and Luye Township Mayor Li Wei-shun also joined the egg-standing challenge.

Sheng'an Temple Chairman Li Shu-gen told CNA reporters that the tradition of collecting Wushi water during the Dragon Boat Festival has been passed down for generations in Yongan Village. The water is drawn from the natural spring known as Yulong Spring. Locals believe that the yang energy is strongest at noon on the Dragon Boat Festival, and water collected at this time carries blessings for health and safety.

He said the 'egg-standing' custom is a traditional Dragon Boat Festival practice. It is believed that standing an egg upright at noon on the festival—known as 'Wushi' (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.)—allows one to absorb the yang energy of heaven and earth and gain good fortune for the entire year.
