Central News Agency Report
(CNA reporter Wu Po-wei, Brussels, June 19) The Representative Office of Taiwan to the EU and Belgium today issued a statement in five languages on its Facebook page, rejecting the Chinese Embassy's assertion that 'Taiwan is part of China.' The office stressed that claims contradicting basic facts cannot become true, no matter how often they are repeated.
On June 19, the Chinese Embassy in Belgium posted on Facebook, claiming 'Taiwan is part of China' and urging Belgian citizens to support this position. In response, the Representative Office to the EU and Belgium promptly issued a rebuttal in Chinese, English, Dutch, French, and German.
The office emphasized that the claim 'Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China' fundamentally contradicts basic facts. Even if repeated countless times, it cannot transform falsehood into truth.
The statement presented four key arguments to counter the Chinese Embassy's position.
First, the People's Republic of China (PRC) has never governed Taiwan for a single day since its establishment on October 1, 1949. Under these circumstances, the concepts of 'unification' or 'reunification' are baseless. As the statement put it: 'If you've never married someone, how can you claim to have divorced them?'
Second, the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a fully functioning democracy with free elections, an independent judiciary, and a vibrant civil society. How can a democratic polity be considered part of a country that does not allow its people to freely elect their national leaders?
Third, shortly after its founding, the PRC invaded and incorporated Tibet into its control between 1950 and 1951. This historical fact directly contradicts the claim that 'China's current territory has always been an inseparable part of China since ancient times.'
Fourth, the term 'Xinjiang' literally means 'new frontier' or 'new territory.' If Xinjiang has always been an inseparable part of China, why is it named in a way that explicitly indicates it was newly acquired?
The Representative Office stressed that these questions deserve honest and rational answers, not political slogans. (Editor: Wei Shu) 1150620
