Following the successful consolidation of over 90% of resident support by the end of last year, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an announced today that the Xinwei Residential Complex will officially launch a public tender in July, aiming to build a landmark building integrating modern convenience stores, infant and child care, and community activity centers.
The Urban Renewal Division of Taipei City's Department of Urban Development held an event today to mark the upcoming tender for the Xinwei Residential Complex. Mayor Chiang, in his speech, expressed holiday greetings to residents ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival and announced the good news that the government-led urban renewal project at Xinwei will officially launch its public tender in July.
Chiang shared that he frequently visited the Xinwei area during his middle school years, enjoying local cuisine and creating many memories. Over time, the neighborhood's environment gradually aged, and with limited space, it became unsuitable for living. During a visit four years ago, he heard residents' appeals to lower the barriers for urban renewal participation and has since kept their voices in mind.
He emphasized that without systemic change, using the same methods would only yield the same results. Since taking office, he immediately introduced various measures, and with the joint efforts of the city government, legislators, neighborhood leaders, and residents, they broke through bottlenecks and successfully advanced the project, consolidating the support of over 90% of households.
Chiang particularly thanked city employees from the Department of Urban Development, the Urban Renewal Division, and the Housing and Urban Development Center for personally visiting households scattered across northern Taiwan, hosting 50 briefing sessions, providing over 2,000 consultation appointments, and navigating the ups and downs of communication and integration—making the most critical step forward for the Xinwei urban renewal.
Upon completion, the first floor of the building will house a modern convenience store, along with public service facilities such as infant and child care centers and a community activity center, comprehensively upgrading living functions and becoming a landmark building in Taipei City.
The Urban Renewal Division explained that Xinwei Building was completed in 1971 (Minguo Year 60) as a resettlement housing complex for residents displaced by public works projects, originally planned with 490 small-scale mixed-use residential and commercial units. Over time, the living spaces have aged, and safety and hygiene risks have increasingly emerged—once described as the 'Taipei version of Kowloon Walled City.'
The division noted that the site covers a total area of 3,391 square meters, located in a prime area at the intersection of Xinyi Road and Daan Road, adjacent to Taipei 101 and Daan Forest Park. A 24-story above-ground and 6-story underground mixed-use residential and commercial tower is planned for construction. (Edited by Li Hsi-chang) 1150618
