(CNA New York, 17th - comprehensive foreign news) Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the Long Island 'Gilgo Beach serial killings,' was sentenced today to three life terms without parole after admitting to the murder and dismemberment of eight female victims.
The 62-year-old Heuermann pleaded guilty in April this year to seven counts of murder and confessed to an eighth killing that had not yet been formally charged. These crimes occurred between 1993 and 2010 in the Long Island area near New York City.
Between 2010 and 2011, human remains were discovered in multiple locations along Gilgo Beach, located approximately 48 kilometers east of New York City and within a short driving distance from Heuermann's home. The investigation spanned years without identifying a suspect, later inspiring numerous films and documentaries.
Today, Heuermann was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. U.S. media reported that victims' family members delivered emotional statements in court as the sentence was announced.
A former architect, Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 outside his office in Manhattan, New York.
Investigators began focusing on Heuermann in 2022 after discovering that one of the victims had ridden in a vehicle registered under his name.
Heuermann himself had also conducted hundreds of online searches related to the serial murder investigation, including queries such as 'Why hasn't the Long Island serial killer been caught yet?'
The breakthrough in linking Heuermann to the case came when surveillance teams tracking him in Manhattan observed him discarding a piece of pizza crust. Investigators later collected DNA evidence from the discarded crust, which helped confirm his involvement.
