(Taipei, June 18) Celebrating over half a century of global acclaim, Andrew Lloyd Webber's groundbreaking rock opera 'Jesus Christ Superstar' begins its first-ever tour in Taiwan on June 18. This touring production preserves the original's legendary musical essence while integrating cutting-edge stage technology, offering audiences a fresh and immersive experience of this theatrical masterpiece.
According to press materials released by Wide Art, 'Jesus Christ Superstar' was co-created by musical theatre legends Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Since its 1971 debut, the show has revolutionized the musical theatre landscape with its bold rock sound, becoming one of the most iconic works in modern musical history.
Iconic songs such as 'Superstar,' 'I Don’t Know How to Love Him,' 'Gethsemane,' and 'Heaven on Their Minds' have endured for decades, influencing countless musicians and theatre creators. The work is widely regarded as the origin of the rock musical genre.
Luke Street, who plays Jesus, expressed his hope that audiences will see beyond the divine image: 'I want viewers to see Jesus as a human being with emotions and inner struggles.' Street emphasized that the core of the story is about relationships, not religion: 'At its heart, it’s a story about two friends.'
Javon King, portraying Judas, highlighted the complexity of his character: 'This production allows audiences to reconsider Judas—not just as a villain, but as a deeply conflicted and tormented individual.' King also noted the musical's diverse styles, describing the entire work as 'an album that can be performed on stage.'
The Asian tour is led by British award-winning producer David Ian, featuring the 2017 Olivier Award-winning revival production. Acclaimed by The Guardian as 'glorious, powerful, and revelatory,' the production is set in the final days of Jesus’ life while resonating with contemporary themes such as celebrity worship, interpersonal dynamics, and crowd psychology.
The full-length musical 'Jesus Christ Superstar' will be performed from June 18 to 21 at the National Theater in Taipei. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150618
