(Taiwan News Reporter Wu Che-hao, Changhua, June 18) Heavy rains have severely damaged peanut crops in townships such as Dacheng in Changhua County. The Changhua County Government announced today that the Council of Agriculture has declared the damage to peanuts meets the criteria for cash disaster relief. Farmers with crop losses exceeding 20% can now apply for assistance through their local township offices.

Due to the heavy rainfall, peanut crops in Dacheng, Fangyuan, and Erlin Townships have suffered significant damage. On June 16, Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei visited Dacheng and other affected areas to assess the damage. She emphasized that Changhua is Taiwan’s second-largest peanut-producing region, with approximately 3,058 hectares under cultivation. Prolonged rainfall has left mature peanuts soaked in water-saturated soil, leading to widespread plant rot and seed germination. Magistrate Wang urged the central government to swiftly approve disaster relief funding.

In a press release, the county government stated that the Council of Agriculture has officially announced that peanut crop losses meet the standards for agricultural natural disaster cash assistance. Farmers with loss rates of 20% or higher can apply for relief at their local township offices. The assistance amount is NT$36,000 per hectare.

The county government advised eligible farmers to submit their applications by July 2, bringing required documents—including identification, personal seal, farmers’ association bankbook, land ownership certificate or land use agreement, and other necessary paperwork—to their local township office.
