(CNA reporter Yang Yao-ju, Taipei, June 17) The Group of Seven (G7) leaders issued a joint statement reaffirming their opposition to any unilateral attempt to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait by force or coercion. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that the statement demonstrates that maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait has become an international consensus, and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed sincere welcome and gratitude.
In the joint statement, the G7 leaders emphasized the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law, and opposed any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait through force or coercion. They stressed that such issues must be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a press statement today, stating that Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung sincerely welcomed and expressed gratitude for the continued concrete actions by G7 members demonstrating their high regard for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The Ministry noted that the G7 summit statement reaffirms support for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, indicating that maintaining the status quo has become an international consensus. As a responsible democratic nation in the Indo-Pacific region, Taiwan will continue to cooperate with G7 member countries and like-minded global partners to uphold a rules-based international order and contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
