(CNA, Evian-les-Bains, June 17) Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) today stated their goal to 'significantly' reduce reliance on China's supply of critical minerals through cooperation with partner countries. These minerals are essential materials for producing electronic products such as smartphones.
According to AFP, G7 leaders gathered for a summit in the French town of Evian-les-Bains, on the shores of Lake Geneva, and today issued a statement declaring their target: 'to significantly reduce dependence on any single supplier outside G7 member states and their partner countries for rare earths and permanent magnets to below 60% by 2030.'
The statement also noted, 'This dependence will be further reduced over time, with the ambition of reaching below 50% as soon as possible.' This declaration has also been supported by partner country Australia.
Additionally, amid growing concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), G7 leaders today called on technology companies to develop tools ensuring online safety for minors.
Following a working lunch with top AI executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, they stated: 'We call on digital service providers to develop and apply technologies and systems to ensure minors have a safe, protective, and age-appropriate online experience.'
