(CNA, Sherman, Texas, June 16 —综合 international news) Jensen Huang, CEO of U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) chip giant NVIDIA, emphasized in an exclusive interview with the Associated Press today that society needs new social norms as the AI era unfolds. He also stated that broader adoption of AI will help improve people's quality of life.
According to AP, Huang has consistently expressed optimism about AI’s potential to rapidly transform society, drive economic growth, and enable further scientific breakthroughs. However, he and other industry leaders face growing external concerns about AI’s potential risks. In response to critics warning that AI could eliminate jobs or even threaten human survival, Huang believes he has a responsibility to respond.
In the interview, Huang said, "We need to establish new social norms. I encourage everyone to use AI and actually experience it."
Huang pointed out that AI can design websites, analyze complex documents, guide advanced research, and even plan kitchen renovations—functions that he believes can help narrow the technology gap in the United States. He emphasized that people today can perform high-level computer work even without knowing how to code.
Huang acknowledged the need for certain norms and safety standards for AI, and stressed that national security must be a top priority for this technology, which has recently driven stock market gains and U.S. economic growth.
He cited the example of how society adapted to automobiles in the past. When cars were first introduced, they were criticized for endangering children's safety. However, society later adapted by creating sidewalks, crosswalks, and banning children from playing on roads—changing social norms and behaviors.
Additionally, Huang expressed reservations about government ownership of AI companies. He noted that the U.S. broadly benefits from AI development, saying, "I'm not entirely sure what they're trying to achieve."
On the topic of government stakes, Huang said, "I haven’t discussed it with them either. But remember, these are American companies. Their success is reflected in stock prices, and many Americans are investors. The taxes these companies generate benefit many Americans and create jobs."
He also pointed out that AI companies contribute to increased profitability in energy, construction, and hardware technology industries.
The Trump administration has recently taken a tougher stance on AI regulation. Huang said it is appropriate for the government to focus on national security issues, but stressed the importance of providing clear guidance.
"National security should always be the top priority in all technological development," he said. "However, when formulating export control policies, the risks must be specifically explained."
On energy, Huang emphasized that the U.S. is vulnerable due to insufficient energy supply. Data centers used for AI computing require massive amounts of electricity and could strain the power grid.
While some data centers build their own power sources, Huang said the U.S. started slower in energy development. Without greater energy investment, the U.S. will struggle to maintain its advantage in AI infrastructure, models, and chip development.
Huang did not comment on Trump’s opposition to environmentally friendly energy sources, but noted that concerns among some American households about AI potentially increasing electricity bills reflect the current energy gap. (Translation: Lu Ying-zi) 1150617
