(Central News Agency reporter Lu Chia-jung, Taipei, June 17) KMT Chairperson Cheng Liwen will hold a press conference this afternoon to present the outcomes of her recent U.S. visit. Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Minister Chiu Chui-cheng stated today that Cheng used too much of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) narrative regarding Taiwan and expressed regret that she failed to reflect the majority of Taiwanese public opinion favoring 'maintaining the status quo,' instead emphasizing the 1992 Consensus and opposition to Taiwan independence.
Speaking to the media during a session at the Legislative Yuan's Interior Committee today, Chiu said that public evaluations of Cheng's trip have been varied, and the full picture would depend on her own statements later.
From his personal standpoint, Chiu said he felt Cheng had adopted too much of the CCP's narrative on Taiwan. For instance, on the cross-strait positioning, Cheng stated that the 1992 Consensus means 'both sides belong to one China.' Even past KMT allies would not phrase it this way, because the mainland interprets 'one China' as the People's Republic of China (PRC). Therefore, accepting the 1992 Consensus under this political premise and opposing Taiwan independence aligns exactly with Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping's position.
He added that in Xi Jinping's 'Five Points' proposal in 2019, the 1992 Consensus was redefined as 'both sides belong to one China, jointly pursuing national unification,' with unification to be achieved under the 'one country, two systems Taiwan model.' Under this framework, there is no space for the existence of the Republic of China (ROC). Accepting the mainland's version of the 1992 Cons游戏副本 today effectively means accepting the erasure of the ROC's space.
Chiu criticized Cheng for claiming in the U.S. that cross-strait tensions were caused by 'Taiwan independence provocations,' which he said contradicts the facts. Former President Tsai Ing-wen's eight-year cross-strait policy was based on 'maintaining the status quo,' and President Lai's two-year policy has been 'neither servile nor aggressive, maintaining the status quo.' 'Have we provoked anyone?' he asked.
He emphasized that Taiwan does not face a 'Taiwan independence' issue, but rather the risk of annexation and unification by the Chinese Communist Party.
Finally, Chiu warned that Cheng's 'one China' statements could easily be exploited by the CCP for international propaganda. Cheng claimed that after meeting Xi Jinping, she is no longer a 'plain chairperson.' However, the position of chairperson exists due to democratic society and culture, not because of endorsement by a dictator.
He said he had hoped Cheng would convey Taiwan's mainstream public opinion and the importance of maintaining peace and the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, but she failed to do so, instead emphasizing the 1992 Consensus and opposition to Taiwan independence—something he found regrettable.
