Taitung County Magistrate Rao Qingling participated in the Cross-Strait Forum via a pre-recorded video message. In response, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated that government officials at both central and local levels are strictly prohibited from participating in the forum in any form, including virtual attendance. The MAC has requested the competent authority, the Ministry of the Interior, to investigate and take appropriate action under Article 33-1 of the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area.
Speaking to the media in Taitung on the afternoon of the 17th, Magistrate Rao said she was completely at ease, stating, "This was something I should do." She added, "I did what needed to be done. As for how others perceive it, I accept all views."
Regarding Rao's participation, MAC Chairperson Chiu Chui-cheng reiterated the government's position, emphasizing that public officials are banned from attending the Cross-Strait Forum in any capacity. He confirmed that the case would be handled under Article 33-1 of the cross-strait regulations, with the Ministry of the Interior responsible for investigation and follow-up actions.
