A delegation from Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation visited Taiwan, meeting with the Ministry of Education and engaging with semiconductor industry stakeholders today to foster academic collaboration and talent exchange in semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) fields between Taiwan and the United States.

Deputy Minister Liu Kuo-wei of the Ministry of Education hosted the visiting delegation led by Chad Pittman, Executive Director of the Purdue Research Foundation, to exchange practical experiences on industry-academia collaboration in semiconductor research.

Liu emphasized that collaboration in critical technologies such as semiconductors and AI ultimately hinges on talent development. Taiwan possesses a complete semiconductor industrial ecosystem, while the U.S. holds deep expertise in R&D, engineering education, and innovation. By combining strengths, both sides can cultivate a new generation of tech talent with international perspectives, advanced R&D capabilities, and hands-on industry experience.

Purdue University has recently collaborated with Taiwanese semiconductor materials companies in areas including advanced semiconductor materials, process development, and high-performance applications. Liu expressed hope for expanding future cooperation through joint research, student exchanges, short-term training programs, technical workshops, and industry internships, transforming R&D capabilities into practical talent development resources.

The Ministry noted that under the 'Taiwan-U.S. Education Initiative,' cooperation in key areas such as language education, semiconductors, AI, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) has been continuously expanded. In May of this year, a 'Letter of Intent for the Taiwan-U.S. Semiconductor Education Alliance' was signed to strengthen talent exchange in critical technologies.

The Ministry stated it will continue to encourage universities to establish diverse collaboration models with U.S. higher education and industry partners, helping students from both sides connect with international R&D environments and industrial application fields. (Edited by Yang Sheng-ju)
