Key News on U.S.-Iran Conflict
Central News Report
(Central News Agency reporter Kuo Fang-chun, Geneva, June 18) The United States and Iran will sign a peace agreement in Switzerland, with the venue finalized at the Bürgenstock Resort, a luxury resort on the shores of Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland. From 6:00 PM on the 17th, the entire area entered traffic control, and the Swiss Armed Forces were deployed for security operations.
The Bürgenstock Resort is located on a ridge peninsula in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden. The waters of Lake Lucerne surround its north, east, and south sides, with only a narrow strip of land connecting it to the mainland on the west. The resort complex sits on a ridge at approximately 900 meters above sea level, about 500 meters above the lake surface, offering expansive views of the lake and the majestic Alps. Its difficult accessibility makes it highly suitable for security purposes, a key factor in selecting it as the venue for the U.S.-Iran peace agreement signing.
Starting at 3:00 PM on the 17th, the western road leading to the resort was placed under restriction, leaving only the mountain railway on the cliffside as the sole external access. A reporter visited the site, arriving by boat at the base of the resort’s cliff, then taking a cable car uphill. Staff from the boat company told the Central News Agency that after 6:00 PM, boats would no longer stop at the resort, resuming regular service only on Sunday, the 21st.
Upon arriving at the mountain-top station at 4:30 PM, Swiss military personnel were already beginning to block the access road closest to the resort. Vehicles with foreign diplomatic license plates were seen entering the premises. Hotel staff reminded guests that due to an important event, all visitors must take the last train down the mountain at 5:20 PM.
The resort is owned by Katara Hospitality, a Qatari hotel group. After acquiring it in 2007, the group undertook extensive renovations. It now features high-level security infrastructure capable of hosting heads of state and high-profile international conferences. In recent years, it has hosted several international summits, including the 2024 Ukraine Peace Summit.
The Swiss Foreign Ministry stated this week that the location was “proposed jointly by mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, as well as the United States and Iran.” (Edited by Tien Jui-hua) 1150618
