(Central News Agency reporter Kuo Hsuan-wen, Hsinchu City, June 17) The Hsinchu City Government announced today the launch of a recycling mechanism for expired dry powder fire extinguishers. Residents of multi-unit buildings with 50 or fewer households, or individuals who have purchased dry powder fire extinguishers under 20 lbs, can contact the Fire Bureau to arrange for free collection if the extinguishers are no longer usable due to cylinder rust or other issues.
The Hsinchu City Government held a press conference today on the 'Expired Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher Recycling Mechanism.' Mayor Kao Hung-an stated in her speech that dry powder fire extinguishers are widely used and common fire suppression devices. According to fire safety regulations, dry powder fire extinguishers must undergo performance inspections every three years by professional contractors approved by the Fire Agency. If the extinguisher cylinder is corroded and cannot be reused, it must be replaced.
Mayor Kao pointed out that some smaller residential communities face financial constraints and cannot afford the cost of recycling, leading them to store expired extinguishers in common areas or basements. If left in damp environments for long periods, the cylinders may corrode and leak chemicals, potentially causing public safety hazards and environmental pollution.
She emphasized that this new recycling initiative is expected to collect approximately 2,000 expired extinguishers, resolving disposal challenges for residents and apartment communities.
Fire Bureau Chief Li Shih-kung told the Central News Agency that extinguishers installed in residential buildings represent the largest source of recyclable units. Moving forward, the Bureau will work with fire associations to inform equipment vendors about Hsinchu City’s recycling program and continue promoting public safety initiatives.
