(CNA reporter Hsieh Ching-wen, New Taipei City, June 17) At the Yu-Shan Cup youth baseball tournament, Tainan's leadoff hitter Chang Chung-Kai recorded 2 hits and 2 RBIs, leading his team to a 4-0, five-inning mercy rule victory over Hualien and advancing to the semifinals. An outfielder, Chang is described by coaches as a well-rounded player excelling in offense, baserunning, and defense, and he plans to enter the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) draft.
In the 115th Yu-Shan Cup, Tainan faced Hualien County today. Chang hit a triple in his first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning, scoring the team's first run on a sacrifice fly. He reached base via a walk in the third inning and added an RBI single in the fourth, contributing two insurance runs and successfully stealing a base—finishing with 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
Tainan head coach Tien Chia-ming stated that the team’s offense had struggled in earlier games, lacking continuity. Chang’s first-inning triple was crucial, scoring the opening run and stabilizing team morale. He noted that the team has since corrected previous shortcomings and improved offensive coordination.
Regarding Chang’s draft prospects, Tien described him as a versatile player capable of hitting for average, spraying the ball to all fields, and contributing tactically. While acknowledging that Chang lacks height, he emphasized that the player has been diligently weight training to improve strength and exit velocity, with noticeable results.
Defensively, Chang primarily plays center field. Tien praised his excellent range, sound judgment, and strong arm, noting that while his physique is not ideal, his speed and hitting ability compensate effectively.
Chang stated that he has maintained consistent performance in his senior year competitions and decided to pursue the CPBL draft after the Wang Cheng-chih Cup. He is confident in his defense and speed but aims to enhance his power-hitting through strength training.
Chang admires Nippon Professional Baseball player Takumi Kitamura, citing his on-field consistency and mental resilience—particularly his ability to rebound from a poor at-bat in the next one. (Edited by Lung Po-an) 1150617
