The Wei Chuan Dragons of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) secured a crucial 3-1 victory over the Fubon Guardians today, ending a two-game losing streak. The win was powered by standout performance from foreign pitcher Cristopher Mercedes, who pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just one run, and reduced the team's magic number for the first-half championship to 'M4'—meaning they could clinch the title as early as June 19.

Mercedes began the game by retiring the first 11 batters in a row before Wang Nien-Hao broke the streak with a solo home run—the first hit Mercedes allowed. Although this ended his streak of 33 consecutive scoreless innings, it still set a new franchise record for the Dragons.

Remaining composed, Mercedes allowed only one other hit through the fifth inning and continued pitching into the eighth, exiting with one out after surrendering his third hit. Reliever Chen Kuan-Wei entered and walked pinch-hitter Chang Yu-Cheng but then struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.

Mercedes, applauding from the sideline, finished with 93 pitches over 7.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits, with eight strikeouts and zero walks. His season ERA now stands at an impressive 1.59.

The Dragons' offense broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning to support Mercedes. With runners on first and third, Li Kai-Wei delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Wang Shun-He then drew a walk to load the bases, and Chen Tzu-Hao followed with a two-RBI single to take a 3-1 lead. This rally proved decisive, securing the win and preserving Mercedes' stellar outing.

With momentum building, the Dragons are now on the verge of capturing their first-half title, bringing excitement to fans who are eagerly anticipating the ceremonial red streamer drop. The team aims to maintain consistency in both rotation and offense to seal the championship.
