Central News Agency Report
(CNA reporter Cheng Wei-chen, Changhua, June 17) Persistent rainfall has submerged first-season peanut crops in Dacheng and Fangyuan Townships of Changhua County, leading to widespread waterlogging. In response, DPP legislator Chen Su-yueh convened an on-site inspection today with agencies including the Agricultural and Food Agency, confirming that the damage meets the criteria for natural disaster relief. Chen urged the Ministry of Agriculture to swiftly include Changhua County in the disaster relief program.
Following appeals from local farmers, Chen invited Wu Yin-ning, Deputy Executive Director of the Executive Yuan's Central Joint Service Center; Hsu Hui-ying, Deputy Director of the Central Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture's Agricultural and Food Agency; and Democratic Progressive Party Changhua County Councilors Hung Teng-ming and Hung Tzu-chao to inspect the peanut production areas in Dacheng and Fangyuan.
Chen stated that peanuts have sprouted due to prolonged submersion, making this season's harvest impossible. On-site assessment by the Agricultural and Food Agency confirmed that the damage meets the standards for natural disaster relief. As the Ministry of Agriculture had already announced the inclusion of Yunlin County's peanut crops in the disaster relief program the previous day, Chen called for Changhua County to be similarly included without delay, warning that farmers could otherwise face total financial loss.
Chen noted that in March, the Ministry of Agriculture raised the cash assistance amounts for natural disaster relief. For peanuts, the subsidy increased from NT$30,000 to NT$36,000 per hectare. She reminded farmers affected by the recent heavy rains to promptly report damages to their local township offices, enabling the government to accurately assess the affected area and facilitate disaster relief applications.
