Central News Agency Report
(CNA reporter Lin Chang-shun, Taipei, June 17) A man surnamed Li, after using drugs, parked illegally and then fled from a police inspection by driving away, crashing into a patrol car and injuring three police officers. The first and second trials sentenced Li to one year in prison for assaulting a public officer lawfully performing duties while operating a motor vehicle. The Supreme Court rejected his appeal, finalizing the judgment.
According to the court ruling, around 1:00 a.m. on December 18, 2024 (Republic Era Year 113), Li used heroin and amphetamines at a shrimp fishing venue in Kaohsiung City, then drove onto the road and parked illegally beside Badu North Road in Renwu District, Kaohsiung. Patrol officers approached to inspect the vehicle. Fearing penalties, Li immediately drove off, speeding up to 100 km/h and repeatedly running red lights.
Officer Pan, upon receiving the alert, drove a patrol car with warning lights and sirens activated, positioning it as a roadblock to intercept Li. However, Li drove straight into the patrol car, causing Officer Pan to suffer acetabular fracture, forehead abrasion, left ear laceration, and concussion. Two other officers surnamed Zhang in the patrol car sustained head abrasions and multiple blunt force injuries to their limbs.
Police arrested Li at the scene and seized two packets of heroin, two packets of methamphetamine, and a set of droppers and transparent plastic containers containing residue of the second-class controlled substance etomidate (under separate investigation). Li was taken to the hospital due to injuries. Urine tests confirmed positive results for morphine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine.
The first and second trials sentenced Li to one year in prison for assaulting a public officer while operating a motor vehicle, and an additional six months for driving with detectable levels of drugs in his urine, with the latter eligible for commutation to a fine. The Supreme Court rejected the appeal, finalizing the case. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150617
