Central News Agency Report
(Taipei, June 17, CNA reporter Chen Jung-sen) At the 2026 Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II tennis tournament held in Malaysia, Taiwan's national team swept Sri Lanka 3-0, powered by the dual-threat performance of Taiwan-UK mixed athlete Wan Yi-Wen, securing their second consecutive win.
The 2026 Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II is divided into Groups A and B. After a round-robin format, the top two teams from each group advance to cross-group playoffs, with the winners earning a promotion to the 2027 Asia/Oceania Zone Group I. Taiwan was placed in Group B alongside Malaysia, Laos, Uzbekistan, and Sri Lanka.
Following yesterday's straight-sets victory over host Malaysia, Taiwan faced Sri Lanka today. The first singles match featured 19-year-old mixed-heritage player Wan Yi-Wen, who dominated in 73 minutes with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The second singles point was secured by Yang Ya-i, who won both sets 6-1, giving Taiwan an unassailable lead.
Originally scheduled to play in the third doubles match, 'Queen of Versatility' Hsieh Su-wei was rested after the victory was confirmed. Instead, Wan Yi-Wen partnered with the in-form 'Pistol' Liang En-shuo. The duo, nicknamed the 'Heaven-Dragon Earth-Tiger Pair' due to their 22cm height difference, delivered a double bagel, winning both sets 6-0 to secure Taiwan's second consecutive win.
After the match, Wan said in an interview: 'I was a bit nervous at the start of my singles match, and my serve wasn't as stable as yesterday's—perhaps because representing Taiwan is an honor, and I put too much pressure on myself. After the second singles match, the coach told me I might play doubles. I thought it would be a good chance to adjust my serve and show my true ability.' (Editor: Li Heng-shan) 1150617
