(Taipei, June 17, CNA reporter Chen Chih-chung) The winner of the 7th Tang Prize in Sinology for 2026 was announced today, with Professor Ge Zhaoguang of Fudan University in China being the sole recipient. Specializing in the history of Chinese thought, Ge's 'What Is China?' series has had particularly far-reaching influence, and he has actively engaged with international Sinological trends and theoretical-methodological debates.
The Tang Prize Foundation announced today that Ge Zhaoguang is the recipient of the 7th Sinology Award. Born in Fujian Province, China, Ge experienced the Cultural Revolution, during which his education was interrupted and he worked in Guizhou Province. After the Cultural Revolution, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Peking University, and has held academic positions at Yangzhou Teachers College and Tsinghua University in Beijing. He currently serves as Distinguished Senior Professor at the Institute of History, Letters, and Philosophy and the Department of History at Fudan University.
While Ge Zhaoguang is not the first ethnic Chinese recipient of the Sinology Award, his academic career differs from previous laureates in that it has been primarily based in mainland China. The 2014 laureate, Yu Ying-shih, lived and worked across China, Hong Kong, and the United States; the 2020 laureate, Wang Gungwu, was active in Southeast Asia and Australia; and the 2024 laureate, Xu Zhuoyun, was the first recipient born in Taiwan.
