2026 FIFA World Cup Key News
(Central News Agency, Foxborough, USA, June 16) — Erling Haaland scored two goals on his World Cup debut as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1 today, securing a victorious start in their first appearance at a major international tournament in 26 years.
According to AFP, Manchester City forward Haaland opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a close-range finish, giving Norway an early lead. Iraq's forward Aymen Hussein equalized shortly after with a powerful header.
Just before halftime, Haaland capitalized on a defensive error to score his second goal, restoring Norway's lead. This marked his 57th goal in 51 appearances for the national team.
Norway's substitute Leo Ostigard then headed in a crucial third goal, effectively sealing the outcome.
In stoppage time, Iraq's Hussein accidentally scored an own goal, adding a fourth for Norway and finalizing the 4-1 victory.
The win places Norway top of Group I on goal difference, level on three points with France, who earlier defeated Senegal 3-1. Norway will face Senegal next on June 22 in New Jersey. (Compiled by: Hsu Jui-cheng) 1150617
