(CNA reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, June 16) International home furnishing brand IKEA is entering Tainan. The Tainan City Government announced today that IKEA has officially confirmed plans to open its first location in the city at the South纺 Shopping Center, bringing more comprehensive and diverse consumer lifestyle options. However, city councilors have raised concerns about potential traffic issues in the surrounding area.

Mayor Huang Wei-cher stated in a press release today that after years of active efforts, the city government maintained close communication with IKEA, providing integrated assistance and investment services, ultimately succeeding in attracting IKEA to choose Tainan as a key expansion city, with the store to be located at the South纺 Shopping Center.

Huang emphasized that Tainan has seen steady urban growth driven by the dual engines of semiconductor industry development and cultural tourism. Citizens' purchasing power and demand for quality of life continue to rise. IKEA's entry signifies strong international confidence in Tainan's market potential and future prospects, and will create jobs, boost the surrounding business district, and enhance the city's commercial service capacity and competitiveness.

However, IKEA's arrival may also bring traffic challenges. Independent Tainan City Councilor Lee Tsung-lin welcomed IKEA's entry into the East District's South纺 commercial zone, noting that citizens have long anticipated it. But he warned that without proactive planning by the city government, future traffic flow could become overwhelming, worsening existing congestion.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councilor Tsai Hsiao-wei also stated that IKEA's presence will help enhance Tainan's commercial functionality and urban appeal, driving development in the East District and nearby Pingshi Military Camp area. However, she cautioned that increased foot and vehicle traffic will inevitably place greater strain on the existing transportation system. The city must make early contingency plans to avoid severe traffic jams. (Edited by Chen Jen-hua) 1150616
