(Taipei, June 16, CNA by reporter Li Chien-chung) Taiwan's women's tennis team secured a commanding 3-0 victory over host Malaysia in their opening Group B match at the 2026 Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II tournament held in Malaysia. Singles players Wan Yi-wen and Yang Ya-i both won in straight sets, followed by a dominant doubles win from Hsieh Su-wei and Liang En-shuo, giving Taiwan a perfect start to the competition.
The 2026 Fed Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II is divided into Groups A and B. Teams compete in a round-robin format, with the top two from each group advancing to cross-over semifinals. The winners will earn promotion to the 2027 Asia/Oceania Zone Group I.
Taiwan, who had a bye on the first day, faced Malaysia today. In the opening singles match, 19-year-old debutant Wan Yi-wen broke the deadlock at 4-4 in the first set and went on to win eight consecutive games, securing a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
In the second singles match, Yang Ya-i recovered from an early 0-1 deficit to win ten consecutive games, sealing a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win. With these two victories, Taiwan had already secured the overall tie.
The third match, a doubles contest, featured Taiwan's 'Queen of Versatility' Hsieh Su-wei and the in-form 'Little Cannon' Liang En-shuo. Despite the outcome already being decided, the pair used the match to build rhythm, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Liang En-shuo recently reached the women's doubles semifinals at the French Open partnering Japan's veteran Shuko Aoyama, and last week won the doubles title at a WTA 250 event in the Netherlands before immediately traveling to Malaysia to join the national team.
In a post-match interview, Liang said, 'Playing closely with a Grand Slam champion is a great learning opportunity. I've learned a lot from her.'
Head coach Hsiao Cheng-i, making his Fed Cup debut, commented, 'Hsieh Su-wei's anticipation and adaptability at the net are exceptional. She can suddenly change her shot direction from the baseline, disrupting her opponents' judgment. She truly plays at a Grand Slam champion level.' (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150616
