(Central News Agency reporter Wang Hung-kuo, New Taipei, June 16) Hsieh Cheng-da, former Deputy Mayor of New Taipei City and recently nominated as a Control Yuan member, issued a written statement today announcing, 'After careful consideration, I have decided to decline the nomination to the Control Yuan,' as a concrete expression of support for the Legislative Yuan's constitutional amendment proposal to abolish the Control Yuan. He expressed gratitude to President Lai for the nomination.
The current term of Control Yuan members will expire on July 31 this year. According to regulations, new members are scheduled to take office on August 1. On June 11, the Presidential Office announced a list of 27 nominees for Control Yuan members, including Hsieh Cheng-da, a practicing lawyer and former Deputy Mayor of New Taipei City.
In his statement, Hsieh said that as a senior lawyer and former policymaker, upon receiving the consultation regarding the Control Yuan nomination, he believed his extensive administrative experience and expertise in human rights and labor issues would enable him to respond fairly and swiftly to public expectations for the Control Yuan, and contribute to restoring public trust in the institution. This was his original motivation for accepting the nomination.
However, following the announcement of the Control Yuan nominee list, extensive public discussion emerged, particularly regarding the proposal to abolish the Control Yuan. For the first time, there appears to be cross-party consensus, and public opinion largely supports the idea. Hsieh stated that he agrees with this position, and therefore has decided to decline the nomination as a concrete act of support for the Legislative Yuan's constitutional amendment proposal to abolish the Control Yuan. He reiterated his gratitude to President Lai for the nomination and thanked all parties for their concern and support. (Edited by Lin Shu-hui) 1150616
